City & Guilds Level 1 Award / Certificate in Practical Horticulture Skills (Walton Hall)

About the course

Brief Description of the Course:

This qualification consists of 8 units, or ‘practical skills’. This course is ideal for those joining a horticultural qualification for the first time or progressing from the City and Guilds Level 1 Award in Practical Horticulture Skills.

Entry Requirements:

Just a keen interest in horticulture and gardening.

Course Units:

  • Prepare the ground for sowing or planting

  • Plant container grown subjects

  • Prepare soil and apply organic mulch

  • Water a bed, border or area of plants in containers

  • Determine soil pH with a colour indicator test kit

  • Prepare and plant a container for display

  • Sow seeds indoors in containers

  • Prick out seedlings singly

Learning and Assessment:

Every student builds up a portfolio of evidence, which is a record of the practical assessments that have been completed. Student’s practical skills are assessed through the observation of practical work and assessor questioning confirms their understanding.

Adult Education Budget funding is available for those aged 19 and over joining this course (subject to eligibility).
