About the course

The College offers opportunity to study at level 3 (A level equivalent) for students who wish to develop a comprehensive understanding of Golf Studies - encompassing practical techniques, academic knowledge and technical skills. It is a popular option for both school leavers and successful Level 2 Diploma students. The course incorporates a mix of practical, classroom lectures, industry visits and case study exercises.

Extended Certificate

Careers in the Sport and Active Leisure Industry

Learners will develop an understanding of careers in the sport and active leisure industry. They will gain the skills, knowledge and behaviours needed for employment in the industry.

Wellbeing and Sport

Learners will explore the importance of physical activity and wellbeing for different types of participants and suggest ways to improve their physical and mental health status.

Developing Coaching Skills

Learners will develop their coaching knowledge and skills to help improve others’ performance skills, techniques and tactics across a range of sports.

Foundation Diploma

Health, Wellbeing and Sport

Learners will explore the importance of physical activity and wellbeing for different types of participants and suggest ways to improve their physical and mental health status.

Developing Coaching Skills

Learners will develop their coaching knowledge and skills to help improve others’ performance skills, techniques and tactics across a range of sports.

Learners will explore the principles of sport development, the key agencies involved and provide practical examples of current practice

Self-employment in Sport and Physical Activity

Learners will develop knowledge and understanding of self-employment and apply this to develop a self-employment strategy within the context of the sport industry.

Learners will develop an understanding of careers in the sport and active leisure industry. They will gain the skills, knowledge and behaviours needed for employment in the industry.

Organising Events in Sport & Physical Activities - Optional

Learners will explore key opportunities and requirements associated with organising sports and fitness events, produce their own promotional materials and plan and deliver a sports event.

Looks at the rules of golf and the roles and responsibilities of the officials e.g. starter.

Fitness Training - Optional

Learners will plan fitness training sessions and design a fitness training programme.

Technical and Tactical Skills in Sport - Optional

Enables learners to assess their own and others technical and tactical skills, and plan their own golf development.

Marketing Communications - Optional

Learners will explore the use of marketing communications to enhance the reputation and image of a range of businesses.

Entry requirements & additional information

Entry requirements

These courses give a good technical training and education providing a vocational alternative to A Levels and the opportunity for successful students to progress to Higher Education. Students are normally aged 16 or over and the following requirements are needed:

Advanced Level 3 Suite:

Level 3 BTEC Extended Certificate in Sports Coaching - (1 year)

An English Language GCSE at C (4) or higher plus a minimum of three others at C (4) or higher, including Maths or Science.

Level 3 BTEC Foundation Diploma in Sports Coaching & Development - (1 year)

An English Language GCSE at C (4) or higher plus a minimum of four others at C (4) or higher, including Maths and Science.

Level 3 BTEC Diploma in Sports Coaching & Development (2 year)

An English Language GCSE at C (4) or higher plus a minimum of three others at C (4) or higher, including Maths or Science.

Level 3 BTEC Extended Diploma in Sports Coaching & Development - (2 year)

An English Language GCSE at C (4) or higher plus a minimum of four others at C (4) or higher, including Maths and Science.

In addition Learning Areas may apply specific agreed aptitude assessments that assist selection.

Applicants for all courses in Golf Studies are expected to show a strong commitment to the industry and a strong personal statement.

Learning and assessment

Assessments will include assignments, presentations and reports. There are no formal examinations on the Level 3 BTEC Diploma.

Progression

As a course equivalent to A Level the Level 3 BTEC Diploma is an ideal spring board for progression to a Foundation Degree or Full Degree depending on UCAS points gained.

Careers

Employment opportunities in Golf and its related industries are currently very good. The Subsidiary, Diploma and Extended Diploma Golf Studies provide the qualification and experience for entry into the industry at an operational level with future prospects for management.

Equipment and/or Clothing: Indoor/outdoor sports/golf kit including waterproofs.

Costs that are mandatory for the course:

Clothing – £70

Costs that are optional for the course:

Trips – ranging from £40-£650

Enrichment Golf Tour £100 joining fee plus events ranging from £25-£70
