About the course

Myerscough College has teamed up with Lancashire County Cricket Club and Lancashire Cricket Foundation to offer a fantastic opportunity to students wishing to pursue a career within the cricket and sports industry. The Myerscough College Cricket combines academic sporting qualifications with practical skills development, coaching and competitive fixtures.

The College offers opportunity to study at level 3 (A level equivalent) for students who wish to develop a comprehensive understanding of Cricket - encompassing practical techniques, academic knowledge and technical skills. It is a popular option for both school leavers and successful Level 2 Diploma students. The course incorporates a mix of practicals, classroom lectures, industry visits and case study exercises

Learners will explore the importance of physical activity and wellbeing for different types of participants and suggest ways to improve their physical and mental health status

Developing Coaching Skills

Learners will develop their coaching knowledge and skills to help improve others’ performance skills, techniques and tactics.

Careers in Sport & Active Leisure

Learners will develop an understanding of careers in the sport and active leisure industry. They will gain the skills, knowledge and behaviours needed for employment in the industry.

Sports Psychology - Optional

Learners will develop an understanding of the psychological demands of sport and develop techniques to improve sporting performance

Fitness Training - Optional

Learners will plan fitness training sessions and design a fitness training programme

Technical & Tactical Skills in Sport - Optional

Learners will explore the technical skills and tactical demands of selected sports and those required by elite sports performers. Learners will plan and review their own abilities for a selected sport

Rules, Regulations & Officiating - Optional

Learners will identify the rules and regulations of a selected sport and the roles and responsibilities of the officials. They will then officiate in a selected sport

Entry requirements & additional information

Entry requirements

Entry Requirements:

These courses give a good technical training and education providing a vocational alternative to A Levels and the opportunity for successful students to progress to Higher Education. Students are normally aged 16 or over and the following requirements are needed:

Advanced Level 3 Suite:

 

BTEC Level 3 Extended Certificate (360) - (1 year)

An English Language GCSE at C (4) or higher plus a minimum of three others at C (4) or higher, including Maths or Science.

 

BTEC Level 3 Foundation Diploma (540) – (1 year)

An English GCSE at C (4) or higher plus a minimum of four others at C (4) or higher, including Maths and Science.

 

BTEC Level 3 Diploma (720) – (2 year)

An English GCSE at C (4) or higher plus a minimum of three others at C (4) or higher, including Maths or Science.

 

BTEC Level 3 Extended Diploma (1080) - (2 year)

An English Language GCSE at C (4) or higher plus a minimum of four others at C (4) or higher, including Maths and Science.

In addition Learning Areas may apply specific agreed aptitude assessments that assist selection.

Applicants for all courses in Cricket Studies are expected to show a strong commitment to the industry and a strong personal statement.

Learning and assessment

Assessments will include assignments, presentations and reports. There are no formal examinations on the Level 3 BTEC Diploma.

Progression

As a course equivalent to A Level the Level 3 BTEC Diploma is an ideal spring board for progression to a Foundation Degree or Full Degree depending on UCAS points gained. Successful students may progress to higher education courses such as:

  • FdSc Cricket Coaching and Performance
  • FdSc Strength and Conditioning
  • FdSc Sports Coaching
  • A range of BA and BSc undergraduate degrees

These Foundation courses require a minimum of 48 plus UCAS points dependant on entry criteria for each individual university establishment.

Careers

Employment opportunities in Cricket and its related industries are currently very good. The Cricket Studies courses provide the qualification and experience for entry into the industry at an operational level with future prospects for management.

By studying cricket at Myerscough College you are giving yourself an excellent opportunity to secure a dream job in the sport. Our dedicated teaching staff provide cricketers of all abilities, including beginners, with an excellent cricketing education and the chance to fulfill their playing ambitions or move into the cricket/sports industry. In partnership with Lancashire County Cricket Club, our courses are available at our Preston, or Emirates Old Trafford Centres.
