Arboriculture Routeways

About the course

The Arboriculture Routeways programmes is designed to meet the needs of those who wish to progress into employment as Arboriculture Practitioners. The programme is a collection of the legislative qualifications required to practice in the sector with time allocated for supervised practice and experience.

It is recommended that students also complete the Level 2 Technical Certificate in Arboriculture either before progressing onto the Arboriculture Routeways or on completion of this programme.

Qualifications within the Arboriculture Routeways:

  • City and Guilds (NPTC) Level 2 Certificate of Competence in Chainsaw Maintenance and Cross-Cutting

  • City and Guilds (NPTC) Level 2 Certificate in Felling Small Trees up to 380mm

  • City and Guilds (NPTC) Level 2 Certificate of Competence in Climbing Trees and Aerial Rescue

  • City and Guilds (NPTC) Level 2 Certificate of Competence in Using a Chainsaw from a Rope and Harness

  • City and Guilds (NPTC) Level 2 Award in the Safe Use of Manually Fed Chipper

  • City and Guilds (NPTC) Level 2 Award in the Safe Use of Stump Grinders

  • City and Guilds (NPTC) Level 2 Award in the Safe Use of Brushcutters and Trimmers

  • City & Guilds (NPTC) Level 2 Certificate of Competence in Tractor Driving and Related Operations

Entry requirements & additional information

Entry requirements

Learners are aged 16 or over and with a minimum of 2 GCSEs at Grade 3 or above (or equivalent). Learners will must have a head for heights.

Learning and assessment

Students gain practical skills and experience in the woods at Croxteth Park and at local sites/ Each course component includes a separate practical assessment.

Progression

Level 2 Technical Certificate in Arboriculture (if not already achieved), apprenticeship or employment.

Careers

This course provides the legislative qualifications to practice within the arboriculture industry.

Special requirements

The Arboriculture Routeways Programme is free for students ages 16-18 and Liverpool City Region Residents ages 19 and over.

Costs that are optional for this course – although the College provides Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) this is a shared resource and many students prefer to purchase their own. Depending on individual eligibility the College may be able to support learners in purchasing PPE.

Work experience

Students gain valuable work experience throughout this course.

Arboriculture at Myerscough

Myerscough introduced the UK’s first Foundation Degree, the first Honours Degree, the first online Degree and, most recently, the first Masters Degree in Arboriculture. We have a highly experienced team of staff who are well regarded in the industry and regularly deliver training and seminars to those working and researching the subject. The College boasts fantastic arboriculture facitilities and is home to the purpose built National Centre for Arboriculture, a state of the art teaching facility for the subject.
