Promote and Maintain the Health and Well-being of Animals
The aim of this unit is to provide the learner with the knowledge and skills required to promote and maintain the health and welfare of animals. This covers identification of abnormal signs, monitoring the animals and carrying out procedures to promote the health and welfare.
Deliver Basic Treatments to Animals
The aim of this unit is to provide the learner with the knowledge and skills required to deliver basic treatments to animals. The word ‘treatments’ is used in its broadest sense to include: cleaning and hygiene procedure, basic health care treatments and other routine procedures. In accordance with the Veterinary Surgeons Act Schedule 3 lay persons may not provide medical treatments to animals. In Learning Outcome 2 of this unit, learners must only provide medication prescribed by, and under the direct supervision of, a veterinary practitioner.
Provide Opportunities for Animals to have Freedom to Exercise
The aim of this unit is to provide the learner with the knowledge and skills to provide enrichment opportunities for animals to exercise freely. It is not designed to cover exercise which applies to animals that are trained for competitive purposes. This unit is designed to be applicable to working with all species of animals that need to exercise/enrichment.
Select and Prepare Accommodation for Animals
The aim of this unit is to provide the learner with the knowledge and skills required to establish accommodation for animals. This involves selecting and preparing the accommodation ready for use by animals, setting up suitable environmental conditions, and introducing the animals to the accommodation. The learner will be fully aware of the importance of relevant health, safety and animal welfare in connection with this work.
Maintain the Cleanliness and Bio-security of the Animal Care Working Environment
The aim of this unit is to provide the learner with the ability to demonstrate the knowledge and skills required to undertake routine cleaning within the workplace and equipment and materials that are used within the course of normal work. Cleaning is a key factor in ensuring health and safety of the people and animals within the workplace and promoting the organisation’s image to customers. This unit does not refer to the maintenance of equipment or machinery undertaken by specialist contractors.
Entry requirements & additional information
Entry requirements
This course covers practical skills and relevant background knowledge. Students are normally aged 16 or over and the following qualifications are needed:
- 2 GCSEs at Grade D (3) or equivalent, one must be English Language.
It is strongly recommended for applicants to gain some voluntary experience within the animal sector in order ensure that they are fully prepared for the expectations of the study programme and gain a realistic insight of the animal industry. A minimum of five days (which do not have to be consecutive) is advised.
Learning and assessment
A variety of assessment methods will be used these will include portfolio building, assignments and practical assessments.
Progression
Level 2 students can progress to level 3 programmes subject to published entry requirements and satisfactory performance at level 2.
Careers
Employment in kennels, catteries, pet shop, grooming parlour, welfare societies e.g. RSPCA.
Special requirements
College warehouse jacket (purchased via animal studies centre approx. £30) or own boilersuit can be purchased
Wellington boots or other sturdy work boots.
Tetanus vaccination up to date.
