About the course

Introduction

This LANTRA approved course will equip you with the skills to treat lame cows effectively. It is aimed at cattle farmers who require staff training as part of Red Tractor Standards Scheme or for their milk contract or want to be better equipped to deal with lame cows on their farm.

What are the entry requirements?

No entry requirements are needed. This course will provide the fundamentals for foot trimming and is a recommendation prior to attending our foot trimming courses.

How long is the course?

9am-5pm

What will the course involve?

The course is taught by a qualified foot trimmer and a vet. The course will teach both practical skills and knowledge of how to treat lame cows effectively. There is a multiple choice assessment to check your learning on the day. You will receive a LANTRA certificate of competence on completion of this course.

How long will I be learning?

The session is a single day course.

What equipment will I need?

Bring fully cleaned and disinfected waterproofs and wellies. If you prefer your own gloves for foot trimming please bring these.

What can I expect to learn from this course?

The anatomy of a cows foot, the main causes of lameness and how to treat them, how to block a hoof, mobility scoring, correct methods of foot trimming. There will be plenty of opportunity for practical training using feet from an abattoir.
