Myerscough football students meet Manchester United star Bruno Fernandes during their trip to Portugal

A large group of staff and students were given the opportunity to spend almost a week based in the country, as part of an educational trip and training camp packed with activities.

This included playing in competitive games for both male and female students, as well as taking part in training, team building exercises and sight-seeing.

After arriving in Lisbon, the Myerscough group began their trip with a visit to the Sporting CP Academy, a world-renowned training ground where legends like Cristiano Ronaldo, Quaresma, Nani, Eric Dier and many more developed their skills. The opportunity for students to train in a historic environment was an incredible experience, and the players pushed themselves to make the most of it.

After an intense session, it was time to relax and enjoy some beach football and time by the sea. The perfect way to unwind, have fun, and soak in the Portuguese sunshine.

The day ended with a thrilling match against Seixal Clube 1925, which Myerscough won 3-2, with the game proving to be a great test for the squad and a fantastic way to start the tour.

The following day combined sightseeing and top-level football, making it another unforgettable experience.

The afternoon was spent exploring the beautiful area of Belém, one of Lisbon’s most historic and picturesque districts. The team took in iconic landmarks like the Belém Tower and the Jerónimos Monastery, while also getting a taste of Portugal’s famous pastéis de nata.

But the highlight of the day was undoubtedly the evening match against Bless Academy. It was a fantastic game, with both teams showing great skill, determination, and teamwork, and Myerscough earning the victory.

The plans for the final day of the tour had to be changed due to poor weather conditions, but it was still a fantastic way to wrap up an unforgettable trip.

The day started with a visit to Sporting’s iconic Stadium, where the team got an inside look at one of Portugal’s biggest clubs. Walking through the stands, exploring the facilities, and learning about the club’s history made for an inspiring experience.

Next up was a delicious lunch, the perfect chance to relax and reflect on an amazing week before heading to the next stop: a visit to Estoril Praia’s stadium, another club with a rich footballing culture.

Unfortunately, the evening match was cancelled due to severe weather conditions, but that didn’t stop the team from competing. Instead, they took part in a fun and competitive tournament at Foot Lab, going head-to-head against each other in a fast-paced football challenge.

Dave McCann, Senior Lecturer in Sport at Myerscough College & University Centre, said: ‘’The overall purpose of the trip was to provide our students with an excellent opportunity to experience a variety of sporting activities, sightseeing and cultural visits whilst creating lifetime experiences that they’ll never forget, in addition to playing competitive fixtures against local sides.’’

Myerscough College’s football study programmes continue to be the number one choice for students, with a sector-leading reputation in delivering excellent results for students wishing to progress in a number of areas of the game, including playing, coaching, sports fitness teaching or performance analysis.

Places are still available for September 2025 entry.
