A Myerscough rugby lecturer has received an invitation to represent the iconic Barbarians in a historic celebration game.

Pete Altham has been chosen to don the famous black and white kit for their fixture with Glasgow Academicals RFC, in a special game to commemorate the 100th anniversary of Scotland’s 1925 Grand Slam success.
The historic touring club will take to the field to entertain supporters in their opening games of 2025, with the match taking place on Saturday, May 10th.
Pete, who in addition to being on the staff at Myerscough, plays his club rugby for Fylde, said: "I'm very honoured and excited to be given the opportunity to play for the Barbarians against Glasgow Academicals.
‘’This is once in a lifetime opportunity to play for such a prestigious team. I must say thank you to Nelly, Alex and Chris for all of the support they have given me at Fylde RFC for which I am very grateful."

Fylde's Chairman of Rugby Mark Nelson, said: "The Barbarians are an iconic invitational rugby club and part of rugby folklore. Recognised globally as symbolising the adventurous spirit of the game, to be chosen to represent the Baa-baas is a rare and special honour for a player.
"I am delighted that Pete has been chosen. This is a fantastic honour for him and his family.’’
Being selected for the Barbarian F.C. means a player is invited to join a prestigious, invitational rugby club known for its all-star squads and free-flowing, entertaining style of play. The Barbarians don't have a fixed team but assemble squads for specific matches, often featuring a mix of national team stars, rising stars, and even uncapped players.
“Barbarian F.C are delighted to help celebrate this important anniversary in our game,” said Barbarian F.C President John Spencer.
“The club is renowned for its passion and friendship in the game and it is important we help celebrate these milestones.
“The Scotland team of 100 years ago featured former Barbarian F.C President Herbert Waddell, who was elected to the club’s committee as a player in 1926 so this game holds a close bond for us all.
“Rugby should be proud of its history and the friendships formed on and off the field. The Barbarians hold a special place in the game for players and supporters and we are proud to be celebrating these anniversaries.”
We wish Pete all the very best in the game!
