The college offers a dynamic range of full-time, part-time, and degree-level courses in sportsturf, groundskeeping, and greenkeeping, designed to meet the evolving needs of the turfcare industry.

With strong links to professional bodies and leading employers, Myerscough provides students with hands-on experience using cutting-edge equipment and real-world facilities, including golf greens, football pitches, and cricket grounds.

In the years ahead, the college is committed to sustainability, innovation, and the development of future-ready turf professionals. Its expert staff, many of whom are industry practitioners, ensure that learners gain both technical knowledge and practical skills.

Wes Johnson, Principal and Chief Executive of Myerscough College said: ‘’One of our priority areas is our new Sportsturf Centre of Excellence.

‘’Myerscough has a long and proud history of delivering excellence in sportsturf.

‘’We’re the biggest provider of sportsturf apprenticeships in Europe and have a huge alumni right across the world, and we are now taking this to the next level.

‘’A project team is in place with key staff members to drive forward how we can drive forward a physical centre of excellence at our main Preston campus, and continue to build that international reputation.

‘’Part of that is working with industry to develop a brand new suite of professional qualifications that respond quickly to the needs of the sector.

‘’The first one of those is already up and running – a management programme called Elevate - and a raft of others are to follow quite quickly.

‘’It’s great to see people enrolling in these, and also that key industry partners such as John Deere are willing to sponsor these programmes to make them even more accessible in the future.’’

‘Elevate Leadership’ is a managerial training programme, operating in partnership between Myerscough College and Turf Business magazine, designed for those working in the turfcare industry transitioning in a managerial role and looking to advance their skillset and build a solid foundation for career progression.

Starting last September, Elevate Leadership covers essential management fundamentals, filling a crucial gap for learners advancing from a Level 3 programme, or those beginning a management role.

Paul McGrail, Executive Director & Assistant Principal – Apprenticeships, Skills & Employer Engagement at Myerscough College, said: “The programme is a vital step toward closing the leadership gap in the sports turf sector.

‘’With 82% of UK managers lacking formal training and poor management contributing to nearly a third of employee turnover, Elevate equips future leaders with the skills, confidence, and support they need to thrive.

‘’By drawing on the real-world experience of Myerscough alumni, this programme bridges the critical gap between technical expertise and effective leadership.”

Current research indicates that 82% of managers have minimal or no training to be effective, and approximately 28% of employees have left a company due to poor relationships with their managers.

Elevate Leadership aims to address these training needs, working towards improving staff retention, increasing job satisfaction, and upskilling industry professionals. Modules will cover leadership styles, communication, conflict resolution, project management and appraisals, alongside other essential management skills.

The programme is LANTRA accredited, ensuring that all participants are awarded with an industry standard qualification alongside their training.

The programme consists of 10 modules delivered through an online learning platform, with two days of in person learning to be held at the John Deere Training Academy. The programme will be led by a leading industry trainer.

There’s no better time to join this sector. Myerscough graduates are highly sought after across the UK and internationally, working at top sporting venues and clubs.
